O'Connell vs. Rosales headlines KO Boxing in Edmonton
It’s been a tough year for Cam O’Connell (15-1-1), but the 28-year-old is looking for some redemption.
O’Connell will take part in KO Boxing Canada’s September 22 show at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. CanFight can confirm that O’Connell will take on Mexico’s Guadalupe Rosales (34-13) in a lightweight contest.
The fight will headline a card that is also expected to feature CanFight’s #5 ranked Canadian heavyweight Adam Braidwood (8-1) and rising super featherweight prospect Erik Taylor (6-1-1).
Ranked #2 amongst Canadian lightweights by BoxRec, O’Connell travelled to Cornwall, Ontario in June to challenge former interim world title challenger Tony Luis, losing a decision.
Rosales, 36, is the high-end lightweight journeyman that should give O’Connell a sturdy test. The former Mexico Super Featherweight, WBC Latino Super Featherweight and WBC Latino Featherweight title holder started his career with an impressive 25-1 record before a 2007 loss to Francisco Lorenzo seemingly derailed his career. Rosales has gone a poor 9-12 since 2007 with his biggest victory coming over Edgar Monarrez. Rosales has been knocked out in three of his last seven bouts dating back to 2013.
For O’Connell, the fight works as an opportunity to remind fight fans just how good he can be. Only 28, there’s still plenty of time in the young fighter’s career to emerge as a world title challenger.
