Samuel Vargas headlines November 11 card in Brampton

On Remembrance Day, Ontario’s Samuel Vargas (28-3-1) will be looking for a performance to remember as he climbs his way back towards another world title opportunity.

On September 19, Lee Baxter Promotions announced that Vargas would headline a November 11 card set for the Brampton Powerade Centre.

He’ll defend his WBA-NABA welterweight title against Finland’s Jussi Koivula (23-4-1).

“It's important for us to show our honor and respect for our troops, and particularly on Remembrance Day, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom,” said Lee Baxter of Lee Baxter Promotions, promoter for Vargas. “There's nobody in Canadian boxing who better embodies the warrior spirit than Samuel Vargas, and I'm sure he'll make our troops proud.”

In his last bout, Vargas defeated Ali Funeka in a fun, competitive bout.  A bout against Koivula is the latest in the comeback trail for Vargas who suffered losses to elite welterweights Errol Spence in 2015 and Danny Garcia in 2016. According to BoxRec, Vargas currently sits 40th in the world at welterweight.

For Koivula, who has challenged for the European title in his career, a win against an established name like Vargas would raise his stock significantly in the welterweight division.

While the undercard has not yet been released, Marc Pagcaliwangan (10-0-1) announced via Twitter that he is expected to compete on the card.
